History, mystery, and a tarot reading exploring one of America’s most enduring unsolved mysteries.
The Mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke
Imagine returning home after three years away, only to discover that an entire settlement has vanished. No clear explanation, no bodies, and almost no clues about where its inhabitants went. All that remains is a mysterious word carved into wood.
This is the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, one of the most fascinating historical mysteries in North American history.
What was the Roanoke Colony?

In 1587, a group of English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina, in an attempt to establish a permanent English settlement. The expedition was led by Governor John White and included men, women, and children.
Among the settlers was White’s daughter, Eleanor Dare. In August 1587, she gave birth to Virginia Dare, traditionally recognized as the first English child born in the New World.
The settlement faced serious difficulties from the beginning. The colonists struggled with limited supplies, uncertain food sources, tensions with Indigenous communities, and the challenges of surviving in unfamiliar surroundings.
Eventually, the settlers persuaded Governor John White to return to England to obtain additional supplies and assistance. He left in 1587, intending to return as soon as possible.
However, the war between England and Spain delayed his return. White was unable to make it back to Roanoke until August 1590.
When he finally arrived, he discovered that the settlement had been abandoned.
There was no clear sign of what had happened to the colonists. Their fate, including that of Virginia Dare, remained unknown.

The mysterious word: CROATOAN
One of the most intriguing clues was the word CROATOAN, carved into a wooden post. The letters CRO were also found carved into a tree.
Before leaving, John White had arranged with the colonists that they should leave a message indicating their destination if they moved elsewhere. A cross was supposed to accompany the message if they had been forced to leave under dangerous circumstances.
White reportedly found no such cross.
Croatoan was the name of both an Indigenous people and an island, now known as Hatteras Island, located south of Roanoke. The Croatoan people had previously maintained connections with the English settlers.
This led White to suspect that the colonists might have moved to Croatoan.
But he never established what had happened to them. His plans to investigate further were disrupted by bad weather, and he ultimately returned to England without finding the missing settlers.

What are the main theories?
There is no universally accepted explanation for the disappearance, but several theories have been proposed.
1. The settlers joined Indigenous communities
One of the leading theories is that some or all of the colonists relocated and joined nearby Indigenous communities, possibly the Croatoan people. The carved message supports the possibility that they intended to travel there, although it does not prove that they arrived safely.
2. They moved inland
The settlers may have searched for better resources, farmland, or a more suitable location. John White had reportedly discussed the possibility of moving inland before he left for England.
3. They died from starvation or disease
The colony faced difficult living conditions and unreliable food supplies. Disease, malnutrition, and other environmental pressures could have contributed to the settlers’ disappearance.
4. Conflict or an attack
Tensions between the English and some Indigenous groups were already present. Conflict could have played a role, although there is no conclusive evidence that a single attack explains the disappearance.
5. Something more mysterious?
The lack of a definitive answer has inspired centuries of speculation, ghost stories, supernatural theories, and conspiracy theories.
However, there is no verified historical evidence that the settlers disappeared because of paranormal activity or supernatural forces.
The historical mystery remains unresolved, and archaeological research continues to investigate what might have happened.
